FAQ's - Karen O'Brien

Q.  Where are you located, and do you travel?

A.  I live in Marshall, WI and that is where my in-home studio is located.  My local and on location sessions cover the greater Madison area and beyond.  Travel up to 30 miles is included in all session pricing, and the travel cost beyond that is billed at .50 cents per mile round trip from Marshall, WI.

Q:  When should I book my session?

A. The earlier the better, I only take a limited number of sessions per month to ensure the highest level of quality and service.  If you are pregnant and want newborn pictures taken, let me know a couple months in advance of your due date so I can plan ahead.

Q.  How are my photos delivered, what's the process?

A.  Digital files will be made available for download directly from my website. Prints will be delivered via mail.   All sessions include a digital gallery of your images where you have the option to purchase additional  A' la carte prints, ready to hang wall art, and digital files online. You can order directly and have additional product shipped right to your door.  No minimum print orders are required with sessions.

Q. Do you release unedited images? Can I have all the photos from my session?

A.  I do not release unedited images, there are no exceptions. An unlimited amount of photographs will be taken during your session, but I will select the best photos to be processed and presented to you in a private gallery for viewing. The number of proofs will vary depending on the collection and session type.

Q. How do I pay?

A.  Session fees are due in full at the time of the appointment along with a signed contract.  I accept cash or checks payable to Karen O'Brien.  I can send a PayPal invoice for billing upon request.

Q.  Who owns the copyright of the photos?

A. I do.  Photos delivered to clients digitally are licensed for personal use only, including printing, social media, and email.  Clients are not allowed to use the photos for financial gain (i.e.; advertising, stock photography, contests with cash prize) without previous consent from Karen O'Brien Photography.

Q. How long does it take to receive final product after the session takes place?

A.  Turn around time is 4-6 weeks.  Depending on my current workload, it may be sooner.  I strive for sooner!

Q. How long is my gallery online?

A. 30 days.  After 30 days a $25 archiving fee will be accessed to display the gallery for an additional month. Sneak peeks will be posted on Facebook within a day or two.  If you place your order within 5 days of the online gallery appearing I will award you with a free 8 x 10 print!  ($25 value!)

Q. What time of the day do you conduct outdoor sessions?

A. I avoid mid-day outdoor sessions.  Best time is early morning or two hours before sunset.  I will work with clients to select the best possible time for their session.

Q.  What do I bring to my session?

A. If you want any special items in your pictures, feel free to bring them along and I will try to incorporate them.  Examples are baskets, crates, crocheted blankets, wagons, or your child's favorite teddy bear or toy.

Q: What do I wear?

A:  It's best to avoid any clothing with logos.  Try to match, but not perfectly.  For children, I love mixing different patterns and textures together.  Pick out the first outfit and coordinate to that.  Solid, neutral colors are always a good choice.  Black or white tops are classic.  Pinterest has "what to wear guides" that you may find helpful!

Q.  Can we bring our dog?

A.  Yes!  I love dogs, and I won't charge up-front for including them in the session.  But keep in mind, if your dog is not cooperative and the session runs longer than expected, an extra fee will apply. Some places have pet restrictions, so please let me know ahead of time so we can make sure the location is pet friendly!
